Classification


GEM has extensive experience in the preparation of classification guides and training materials.  We have also developed and maintained classification training materials and conducted derivative classifier courses. Classification program support includes the following:

  • Reviewing documents to determine classification levels (Top Secret, Secret, and Confidential) and category of information (Restricted Data [RD], Formerly Restricted Data [FRD], National Security Information [NSI], Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information [UCNI], or other sensitive categories of information)

  • Conducting formal training, certification, and re-certification to designate Secret and Confidential authorized derivative classifiers

  • Maintaining and updating internal classification procedures to assure compliance with regulations or instructions issued by the customer

  • Developing and issuing classification training/awareness syllabuses to assure that all policies and procedures are understood by classifiers and reviewing officials

  • Conducting oversight reviews and assessments to assure proper classification program implementation

  • Maintaining continuous contact with appropriate technical staff personnel and with other classification officers in related programs

  • Participating in early planning stages of new programs that have a potential for involving or generating classified and/or sensitive information

  • Assisting and informing personnel who publish or deliver papers at conferences, or any other presentation, of potentially classified subject areas from existing classification guidance in the subject areas of their papers

  • Developing local classification guides

  • Preparing quarterly and annual classification reports setting forth classification guidance provided to customer staff, education and training statistics, document review and declassification statistics, local guide status and pending classification issues

  • Taking appropriate and prompt corrective action whenever a classification violation occurs
